Relation to English

The way I think of it is that English is essentially German plus Latin. German provided the grammar and the basic vocabulary, while Latin provided the vocabulary of fancy words. There's a historical explanation for this, which is that English is a result of the Norman conquest of Anglo-Saxon England; more on this later.

It is this connection between Latin and English that makes study of Latin so rewarding for speakers of English.

To get an idea of what English might look like today if Latin hadn't been added, see the excerpts from Uncleftish Beholding.
