On Authority

Every so often, I get frustrated with our system of government, and when I do, I often end up thinking about how things could be different, how they should be. What I've written here is the fruit of that thinking.

It takes quite a bit of arrogance to think that I, knowing almost nothing of political theory, could possibly come up with a system better than the founders'. Fortunately, I have the necessary arrogance!

Seriously, though … times have changed. We can send messages around the world in an instant, store and retrieve unimaginable amounts of data, and perform nearly arbitrary computations based on it … and with all that, we can't invent a better infrastructure for our political superorganism?! Consider the transportation company I once described. No company of two hundred years ago could even begin to compete with it!

That whole superorganism thing is a bit of a distraction, so ignore it if you like. The point is, times have changed, and new things are possible. I may not have come up with a better system, but perhaps my thoughts will help provoke someone else into doing so.
